John Currie

Beloved husband, father, step-father and grandfather, John D. Currie, Sr., age 61, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, April 15, 2017.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Col. Edward H. Currie, MD and Eleanor Bates Currie; and his step-son, Jon Michael Daniels.
He is survived by his loving wife of five years, Mary Ann Ward Currie, of Gulfport, MS; two children - his son, John David Currie, II, of New Orleans, La., and his daughter Bonnie Jean Currie of Ashville, NC; from his first marriage, two step-children, Rachel Daniels of Ashville, NC., and Tim Daniels of Long Beach, MS; from his current marriage, Mary Elizabeth Smith, Step Daughter, her husband, Aaron M. Smith, Sr. and a grandson Aaron M. Smith, Jr. (Max); and his brother, Edward H. Currie, Sr, of Gulfport, MS.
John was born May 16, 1953, in San Antonio, TX. As a military child, he lived many places including California and England before settling down to the Mississippi Gulf Coast as his permanent home.
John attended Millsaps College, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with a Bachelor of Science in English.
He had many interests including rebuilding boats; he loved his boats. He was devastated by the environmental damages to our Gulf resulting from the BP oil spill.
He was an accomplished artist producing in excess of 2,000 pieces of Abstract Art. He was a fine writer and wrote an abundance of short stories and poetry.
John was a free spirit, but also a very gentle, kind and loving person. He cared for his parents and his grandfather for years prior to their passing and enjoyed helping others.
John was a dearly loved person by many and will be truly missed; he was one of a kind. One of his favorite quotes was "I am me, you are you and we are one." We are one Captain John in both life and death.
The family would prefer memorial contributions to the National Wildlife Fund Save the Gulf Project.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, April 24, 2017 at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport.
