John Harris Childress III, age 83, passed away on June 21, 2018.
He was a native of Marietta, GA and a resided in both Coronado, CA and Ridgecrest, CA before moving to Gulfport in 2002.
John served for 20 years in the U.S. Navy as a member of Underwater Demolition Team 12 and SEAL Team 2. After retiring from the Navy, he worked for 25 years as an electronics technician at the Naval Weapons Center in China Lake, California.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, Lucy Arlene née Haley, and his two children from a previous marriage, John and Alane.
He is survived by his children, Mark Childress (Vicki) of Leimen, Germany, and Matthew Childress (Barbara) of Glendale, AZ; sisters, Susannah Stewart (William) of Montgomery, AL, and Elizabeth Reynolds (Joe) of Atlanta, GA; and grandchildren, Sean, Charlotte, Tyler, Amber, Angela, Sabrina, Danny, Joseph, and Haley.
He was an avid reader, enjoyed relaxing in the mountains and on the seashore, and was a frequent visitor at the casinos.
The family would like to thank the personnel of the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Gulfport for their untiring work and support, taking care of Dad and making the AFRH his beloved retirement home.
