John W. Bell passed away Sunday, February 17, 2008 at home in Destin, Florida after a courageous battle with PSP.
He was born to Mr. and Mrs. Martin Anding Bell in Bentonia, MS on May 10, 1931, and was known as aÌ‚â‚Å“Buddyâ₝ in early years by close friends and family. After serving four years in the Air Force mostly in Chicago, Illinois, he started with South Central Bell in 1955 and worked in several departments in Mississippi and retired as Network Operations Manager in Gulfport, MS for BellSouth in October, 1991. He loved working for the aÌ‚â‚Å“phone companyâ₝ and especially enjoyed the people he worked with as many were like a second family.
John enjoyed being outdoors and hunting deer and elk in Mississippi and Colorado. He also enjoyed cooking on the grill for festivities for the Telephone Pioneers of America and tailgating at USM with family and friends. He moved to Destin, Florida in 1992 and remained active with his telephone friends by doing consulting work for BellSouth in various locations.
Most of all, John loved spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin Anding Bell and Rosa Lee Parks-Bell, sister Katherine Bell Clark and brother Robert aÌ‚â‚Å“Rockyâ₝ Bell.
Survivors include his wife, Grace Bell of Destin, Florida, daughters Elizabeth Clements and husband John, of Panama City Beach, Florida, and Pamela Peterman and husband Douglas, of Hattiesburg, MS, stepsons Richard Raanes and wife Vanessa of The Woodlands, TX, Barry Raanes of Biloxi, MS and Brian Raanes of Biloxi, MS and seven grandchildren.
Special thanks go to his caregivers and nurses, Wendy, Jane and Susy of Covenant Hospice.
Friends are invited to join the family in a celebration of his life at the RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport, MS Wednesday from 6-8 PM with funeral services on Thursday at 11:00 AM with an hour visitation before the service. Burial will follow at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Covenant Hospice of NWF or to the Society for Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, Executive Plaza III, 11350 McCormick Road Suite 906, Hunt Valley, MD 21031.
