Joe Daniel Turner, born on October 26, 1918 passed peacefully from this life on October 23, 2008 three days before his 90th. birthday.
He was preceded in death by his wife Bertha Colburn Turner, parents Laura and Nick Turner, sisters Birtie Foley and Elsie Payne, brother Virgil Turner, and grandson Seth Joseph Nelson.
He leaves to cherish his memory four daughters, Laura (Henry) Waltman, Janice (James) Simmons, Kerry (Gerald) Caudill, and Sigrid Pound; sisters; Vista Watson, Christine Colburn, Berniece Lewis, Estelle Boyd, Evelyn Bagwell; brother Edward D. (Mavis) Turner, nine grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and special family members Jimmy and Debbie Raymond.
Daddy was born and raised on a farm in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, one of ten children born to Laura and Nick Turner. All through his life he longed to be home with his family in the Spencer Hill Community in the Alabama hills. It was the only place he ever called home. He sustained severe wounds serving his country in the United States Army during World War II in France on August 24, 1944. In 1958 his job brought him to the Mississippi Gulf Coast where he spent the last fifty years raising a family. He made a living servicing office machines but his greatest joy came from serving his congregation at the First Free Church of God on Three Rivers Road.
We will miss his smiling face and the bluest eyes weaÌââ¢ve ever seen. Though he will be absent for awhile, he will live in our memories. A battle-scarred soldier, we know he has found peace on a brighter shore, safe from pain at last.
The family wishes to thank faithful friends Irma Dobson, Alma Wilson, Nicky and Renee Johns, Laverne and Hilda Ladner, Berniece Dobson, Jane McManus and Jarvis Harrison. We appreciate the many kindnesses they have shown through the years.
We are deeply grateful to the new friends we met during the last months of his life, the healthcare professionals who made his transition as easy as possible. Kathy Taylor and Bonnie Smith of the Biloxi VA Hospital, Mary Busby and Judy Brewer of Deaconess Home Care, and Debra Hall and Janice aÌâÅSuzyaÌâ Ivey of Camellia Hospice will remain in our hearts as they move on to comfort and care for others in their hour of need
