Joe Troy Scott, 72, of Gulfport, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Saturday, May 24, 2008 in Gulfport after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer.
He was born October 13, 1935 in Braxton, MS, but was a resident of Lyman and Gulfport for most of his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ida Mae Taylor Scott and Franklin Durwin Scott.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Shirley Goudeau Scott; his daughter, Jo Ellen Tappan (Scott); grandson, Shannon Paul Tappan (Lorna); three brothers, Edsel Graves Scott (Dorothy), James Wendell Scott (Shirley), and Don Wesley Scott (Elaine); five nieces and one nephew.
He was a deacon and member of Gulf Gardens Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School.
Mr. Scott graduated from Lyman High School, Class of 1954. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1958 to 1962. He worked as a plumber for Home Plumbing Co., of Gulfport for 19 years. He later opened his own business, Scott Plumbing & Heating Co. for 12 years. Before retiring, he was employed with USM, Long Beach campus.
Mr. Scott enjoyed all sports and was an avid tennis player.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Purushottam Pande and staff at Medical Oncology Group, Dr. Edmundo Rubio and staff at Gulf Coast Lung Center, and also the staff at Canon Hospice for the care of our loved one.
The family prefers memorials to the Baptist Children's Village or to Gulf Gardens Baptist Church Mission House.
The Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 27, 2008 at Gulf Gardens Baptist Church in Gulfport. Friends may visit from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
The RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, Three Rivers Rd., Gulfport is in charge of arrangements.
