Joe F. Barlow Sr., age 86, of the St. Martin Community in Biloxi, passed away on Thursday, February 18, 2021 at his home surrounded by those he loved.
Joe was a native of Hazlehurst, MS and Lake Village, Arkansas. He earned his BSE from Arkansas A&M and earned his MS from the University of Arkansas, in Fayetteville. He was a U.S. Army Paratroopers IV, and was named the 1957 Soldier of the Year.
In 1959 he began his career as an educator in Arkansas where he held positions as biology teacher, Basketball Coach, Athletic Director, Principal and Superintendent. In 1977 he relocated to the MS Gulf Coast where he became the High School Principal at St. Martin High School for one year and then assumed responsibilities as Assistant Superintendent in the Jackson County School District, St. Martin Campus until his retirement in 1997. His accolades include Summa Cum Laude, Arkansas A&M, Alpha Chi Honor Society-Arkansas A&M, Phi Delta Kappa, National Football Foundation Hall of Fame, and St. Martin Athletic Hall of Fame. He dedicated many years of his life educating children and will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.
He was a lifelong Baptist and was a member of Woolmarket Baptist Church.
Joe loved deer hunting, fishing, cutting grass and gardening. But he was happiest when he was surrounded by his family for gatherings.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Wesley Barlow, Sr. and Alene Douglas Barlow; and his first wife, Janice Jarrett Barlow.
Joe is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Marianne Barlow; his sons, Joe Barlow, Jr. (Sharon), Cliff Barlow (Susie), Michael Barlow, and Billy Barlow (Chelsea); his daughter, Terri Barlow Ladnier; his brother, Wesley Barlow, Jr.; his sister Molly Barlow Gramer; his ten grandchildren, Jessica Parrie, Daniel Poulos, Trey Barlow, Amanda Barlow, Jon Michael Barlow, Chase Ladnier, Ashley Herrin, Clifton Barlow, Karmyn Barlow, Jasper Barlow; and his seventeen great grandchildren, numerous relatives, colleagues and dear friends.
The family would like to thank Debra and Regina with Encompass Hospice for the care and compassion shown to Joe during his final days. A special thanks also to family friend and caregiver Val Dunning.
Visitation for friends and family will be held at Woolmarket Baptist Church, 12816 Lorraine Road, Biloxi from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Monday, February 22, 2021. A private funeral service and Interment in Crestlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Ocean Springs will follow.
