Joan Weber Steele, age 81, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 15, 2011.
She was born on February 18, 1930, in Gulfport, to John and Mary Weber.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alex Steele, and her older sister, Mary Lou Williams. Joan is survived by her younger sister, Diane Evans, and her five children, Keith, Danny, Brian, Craig, and Therese Poor.
Joan loved raising her five children, and later watching their families grow. She was a grandmother to ten children (Jennifer, Stefanie, Christopher, Amanda, Michael, Kristen, Andrew, Lauren, Matthew and Jacob) and a great grandmother of five (Sydney, John, Kathryn, Jackson and Isabel). Her family was the heart of her life and she will be sorely missed.
She belonged to the St. John's Choir and Altar Society for over fifty years. Joan was also a lifetime member of Gulfport Elks' Auxiliary Club, a member of Right to Life and she worked with the Gulfport Hospice program. Her volunteer activities included working with the Morning Star Pregnancy Center, Gulfport Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and St. John's Elementary and High School. Her other enjoyable hobbies included reading and gardening.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, September 19, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Catholic Church, where friends may visit from 9:30 a.m. until service time. Interment will follow at Biloxi National Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest next to her late husband, Alex.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Joan's name to St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 2414 17th Street, Gulfport, MS 39501.
Riemann Family Funeral Home, 11280 Three Rivers Road in Gulfport, assisted the family with arrangements.
