Joan earned her Bachelor of Science in Education from Mississippi State University, a testament to her commitment to lifelong learning and the importance she placed on education. This passion was reflected in her engagement with her hobbies, particularly in her love for reading and playing bridge, which she enjoyed throughout her life.

Their son, Alva Earl "Trey" Nichols, III, along with their daughter, Terri Nichols Lee, and her husband, Steven Edmund Lee, carry forward the values and lessons she imparted. Joan took great pride in her role as grandmother to her grandchildren: Casey Evan Lee (Casey), Stephanie Lee Evans (Michael), Jessica Anne Lee, and Tyler Scott Nichols (Halee). She was a loving great-grandmother to John Faulkner Evans, Maddox Lee, Evan James Lee, and Tegan Nichols, with whom she made countless cherished memories.
She was preceded in death by her loving mother, Cora Edwards Faulkner, her father, William Nathaniel Faulkner, her brothers, Raymond Faulkner, Ruble Faulkner, and Paul B. Faulkner, her sister, Celestine Faulkner, and her daughter-in-law, Donna Nichols.
A visitation will be held in her honor on Friday, September 6, 2024, at The Nourishing Place, 606 Tennessee St., Gulfport, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a memorial service at 2:00 PM. A graveside service will follow at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
