James Dale Barfield, known affectionately as "Mr. Fred" and "Mr. B" to many, passed away on July 13, 2023, in Gulfport, Mississippi. He was born on December 31, 1939, in Union, Mississippi, to Clyde and Marie Barfield.
Jim had an incredible career as the owner of Freds Discount Stores on the Gulf Coast. He was a shrewd businessman with an unwavering commitment to his customers and employees. His deep-rooted passion for entrepreneurship led him to earn a Business Degree from the University of Southern Mississippi. Armed with knowledge and determination, Jim dedicated his life to building a successful enterprise that became a favorite among locals.
Aside from his professional accomplishments, Jim lent his skills and knowledge to the community he loved so dearly. For over four decades, he was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Long Beach. During his time there, he selflessly served on several committees.
In addition to his dedication to business and community service, Jim found solace and joy in his passion for horses. His love for horses brought him immense happiness throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Jean Barfield; son Chris Barfield; sister Sue Abernathy; and his parents. He is survied by his daughter Tasha Barfield; grandson Devin Berden; as well as numerous extended family members and friends whose lives have been touched by his presence.
When he wasn't tending to his businesses, participating in community initiatives, or spending time with family, Jim dedicated himself to the National Guard. Through his military service, he demonstrated a profound commitment to his country and a willingness to protect and serve those around him.
The passing of Jimmy Dale Barfield leaves a void in the hearts of many who knew him. As we gather to mourn his loss, let us also celebrate the remarkable life that he lived. Jim's kind soul, unwavering determination, and unyielding love for others will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to have known him. His memory will forever be etched in our hearts, reminding us of the profound impact an individual can have on the world through passion and dedication.
