Rev. James A. """"Jim"""" Julius, LCDR, USN, Ret., age 72, of Long Beach.
Fr. Jim was a native of St. Louis, MO and was a graduate of Christian Brothers College High School. He entered seminary at the St. Louis University Cardinal Glennon College and was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of St. Louis on April 3, 1965 and began teaching school within the diocese. He later earned a Masters Degree in Theology from the University of Notre Dame.
Fr. Jim began his distinguished career with the United States Navy in 1972 and retired as a Lieutenant Commander in 1992 after 20 years of faithful service as a chaplain. He served at various stations with the Navy and after retirement he became chaplain at the U.S. Naval Home in Gulfport. In retirement, he also served as campus chaplain at Mercy Cross High School, Biloxi, and at St. John High School, Gulfport. He assisted at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Long Beach where he was loved by the parishioners, especially the youth.
Fr. """"J"""" will be remembered for his dry sense of humor and his love of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team and especially his beloved Notre Dame Fighting Irish!
He was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony Phillip and Louise Shine Julius, and 2 sisters, Jeanne Klosterman and Kathleen Vogt.
Survivors include his brother, John D. """"Jack"""" Julius and his wife, Patty, of Parkersburg, WVA, and a sister, Mary Hilliard of Houston, TX, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives along with his many friends on the MS Gulf Coast.
Visitation will be Monday, May 24, 2010 from 5 - 7 pm at the RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 19130 Commission Road, Long Beach. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am Tuesday at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, Long Beach, where friends may visit at the church from 9:30 - 10:30 am.
A private interment for the family will be held in Biloxi National Cemetery where full honors will be rendered by the U.S. Navy.
