Jerry Evon Walker, Sr., age 83, of Collins, MS formerly of Gulfport, was called home on Sunday June 27, 2010 to the loving arms of his Heavenly Father and beautiful wife of 60 years, Eva Cooper Walker, who preceded him in death on July 13, 2006.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, Evon and Mable Walker, his brother, Raymond """"Duddy"""" Lewis, his grandmother, Artimese Cuevas and his grandfather, Jerry Cuevas.
Mr. Walker is survived by his childen, Brenda Walker Pleasant of Collins, MS, James Walker and wife Terrie, of Gulfport, Janice Walker of Pascagoula, and Jerry Walker, Jr. of Lucedale, 2 brothers, Tiny Walker, Gulfport, and Gilbert Walker, Brentwood, TN, 1 sister, Carol Cuevas, Long Beach, 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Walker also had a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 - 1945 on the USS Montour APA 101, Amphibious Forces Transport Ship. He worked at Ingalls Shipbuilding for a number of years and worked for the Gulfport Fire Department from 1964 - 1969. He was Sexton of Evergreen Cemetery for 18 years before retiring in 1987.
The Gulfport Kiwanis Club presented Mr. Walker the Humanitarian Award for saving the life of 19 month old Bridgett Duncan who had choked on some food on November 1, 1972. Mr. Walker was a lifelong member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 1 pm Thursday, July 1, 2010 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church where friends may visit from 11 am - 1 pm. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
