Jerome "Jerry" Franklen Schmidt, age 86, of Gulfport, passed away Tuesday, November 19, 2019.
Jerry was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and had resided in Gulfport for over 47 years. He retired from the U.S. Navy (Seabees) at Naval Construction Battalion Center in Gulfport after 20 years of service. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam. Jerry was a distinguished veteran who earned numerous medals and awards during his military career.
Following his retirement, he attended the University of Southern Mississippi, obtaining his Master's Degree in Education. He taught at The Piney Woods School and also in Saudi Arabia. He volunteered for many years for various organizations including Lynn Meadows Discovery Center, Disabled American Veterans, Biloxi VA Medical Center, and the Armed Forces Retirement Home where he resided for the past seven years.
Jerry's hobbies included woodworking (making many beautiful pieces), reading, solving crossword puzzles, and enjoying the outdoors. All who knew him will truly miss him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard G. and Clara (Miller) Schmidt; his wife, Lorraine B. Schmidt; four brothers and two sisters.
He is survived by his son, David Schmidt of Richardson, Texas; daughter, Debbie (Perry) Waggener of Canton, Mississippi; step-daughters, Randi Byrd and Betty Hart of Gulfport; grandchildren, Jordan (Casidee) Schmidt of Morrow, Ohio and Tiffany Hickman of Gulfport; great-grandchildren, Jordan Jay "JJ" Schmidt and Grayson Schmidt of Morrow, Ohio, and Sydne and Jaden Hickman of Gulfport; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jerry's honor to, Navy Marine Corps Relief Society, Covenant House, Boys Town, and Our Daily Bread Ministries.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, November 22, 2019 at 11:00am, at Biloxi National Cemetery. RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, Gulfport is serving the family.
