Mr. Avnel John """"Jay"""" Cuevas III, age 50, lifelong resident of Kiln, passed away on Wednesday, May 13, 2009, in Kiln.
Mr. Cuevas graduated from St. Stanislaus in 1976 and Pearl River Community College in 1979. After college, he worked with the Tennessee Gas Pipeline for 18 years. He has served the residents of Hancock County for the last 10 years as District 5 Supervisor. He was very active in youth sports as a coach and supporter. Jay was a member of the St. Stanislaus Booster Club and the Hancock County Chamber of Commerce. He served on the Hancock County Solid Waste Board, as well as the Board for the Garden Isles Subdivision. He also served on the State Educational Committee for the Board. He was a member of Annunciation Catholic Church in Kiln, was an avid hunter and enjoyed time at the Cypress Lodge Hunting Club in Kilmichael, MS, where he was a member. Jay will be remembered by family, friends, and the community for the many hours he spent cooking with others for charity functions all over the Coast.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Irma Cuevas.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Patricia Cuevas of Kiln; his sons, Jamie Cuevas of Kiln, and Lance Cuevas and his wife, Summer of Kiln; his father, A.J. Cuevas, Jr. of Kiln; his granddaughter, Brooklyn Cuevas of Kiln; and his sister, Joann Garcia of Bay St. Louis.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2009 at St. Matthew Catholic Church, in the White Cypress Community, at 1 p.m. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m.
Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery at Rotten Bayou.
Pallbearers will be Eddie Moran, Greg Dossett, Donnie Haas, Steve Seymour, Donny Lee, Gene Bennett, Byron Ladner, Jess Melancon, John Barnett. Honorary pallbearers will be the Hancock County Board of Supervisors.
