Janet Denison Embry, age 78 of Long Beach, passed away on Sunday, July 21, 2024.

Janet was a 1963 graduate of Gulfport High School.  She received her bachelor's and master's degrees in education from the University of Southern Mississippi.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Thelma Roberts Denison; her father, Oscar Denison; her brother, Joe Denison; and her sister, Becky Denison.

Janet is survived by her children, Jason Embry and Jenna Robertson; and her grandchildren, Jake Embry, Larkyn Embry, Britton Robertson, and Brooks Tinsley.

She was a first grade teacher at Quarles Elementary in Long Beach School District for 43 years.  Janet was a pro at teaching children how to read through song and dance.  She was a "favorite" teacher to many of her students.  Throughout her career, Janet touched the lives of over a thousand children and their families; in addition to her coworkers who she teased and tormented with love.

To her family, she was their rock, their role model, and their best friend.  Nothing brought her more joy than spending time with her children and grandchildren. Janet was a wonderful cook and found joy in cooking for others.  Although many have tried, her cooking skills can not be duplicated as she keeps her pixie dust tightly locked away in her kitchen cabinet.

In the privacy of her home, she loved to sing and dance to some of her favorites, which included Janis Joplin, Dr. Hook, and even occasionally Snoop Dogg.  Janet was a card carrying member of the once-a-month lunch club with Carol Paola and Fudgie Parker.

Janet loved life.  She was such a fun, funny, simple, and selfless woman,  In her own words, her final wishes were "Funeral-cheapest possible.  A pine box is fine.  I have a plot next to my mother, Thelma Denison.  Plant me there."  For countless years, she told many of her family and friends that she wanted everyone to wear a "funny hat" to her funeral.  Even though her passing is a great loss to so many, she would want her life celebrated.  While the funny hat is optional, the family welcomes you to share your favorite "Janet" story at her service.

Janet/Mom/Nee Nee, you will be forever loved and missed.

A visitation will be held from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM, Thursday, July 25, 2024, at Riemann Family Funeral Home, 19130 Commission Road, Long Beach. The funeral service will begin at 2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, followed by interment at Long Beach City Cemetery.
