Jane Corbitt

December 4, 1930 — May 5, 2017

Jane Hargon Corbitt of Brandon, MS passed away on May 5, 2017, in Gulfport, MS surrounded by her loving family. She was 86.
Jane was one of seven children born to Edward Earl Hargon and Norma Ready Hargon on December 4, 1930, in Meridian, MS. She was a petite, redheaded beauty who married her high school sweetheart, Charles Cooper "Red" Corbitt, in Meridian in 1948. They celebrated 37 years of marriage before he passed away in 1986.
In 1954, Jane and Cooper moved to South Jackson where they raised their six children. They were charter members of St. Therese Catholic Church and cherished their lifelong friendships with other parish families. Jane was a stay-at-home mother who raised and guided her children throughout their lives with love and gentle discipline. She was the rock of our family.
When her children were older, Jane began her working career at Cabell Electric Company and later retired from Owens & Minor. In those years, she transitioned from housewife and mother to a businesswoman who was knowledgeable, efficient, and well respected by her employers and customers.
After Cooper's death, she retired and moved to Brandon where she enjoyed gardening, reading, being with her Chat 'n Chew ladies, and going to New Stage productions. She was also active in her newly adopted parish, St. Paul Catholic Church in Flowood, as a parish council member and as a volunteer in several parish ministries. She also was a volunteer at St. Dominic Hospital for many years.
In addition to her husband and parents, Jane was preceded in death by her siblings, Edward Earl "Ed" Hargon, Jr., John Larue "Bubba" Hargon, Robert Thornhill "Bobby" Hargon and Norma Claire "Tot" Hargon Barrett.
Jane is survived by her six children and their spouses, Kathleen Corbitt Monti (Joe) of Bay St. Louis, Chris Corbitt Flowers of Brandon, Claire Corbitt Tyler (Larry) of Madison; Steven Arthur Corbitt, Sr. (Bess) of Ridgelan, Frank Warren Corbitt of Bay St. Louis, John Timothy Corbitt (Margaret) of Lena, MS; her grandchildren, Matthew Joseph Monti; Amanda Marie Monti Estrade (Kevin), Joe Carroll Rutledge, Jr., Olivia Jane Rutledge Peters (Russell), Meade Corbitt Tyler (Devany) ; Bevin Elizabeth Tyler Messer (Richard); Braden Clark Tyler (Madison), Steven Arthur Corbitt, Jr. (Sara), Elizabeth Gwenette Corbitt; Miles Anthony Corbitt (Savannah), Eric Gatlin (Meggan) and Marc Gatlin (Nyssa); 14 adorable great-grandchildren (plus two on the way) who lovingly called their great-grandmother "GG Jane"; her brother, Patrick Joseph "Pat" Hargon (Mary) of Lake Mary, FL; and her sister, Mary Ellen Hargon Lestrade (Oscar) of Moss Point, MS.
The whole family would like to thank Kathleen and Joe for the loving care they provided to Mama during her last 18 months. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to St. Paul Catholic Church, 5971 Hwy 25, Flowood, MS 39232 or to Catholic Charities, 850 E. River Place, Jackson, MS 39202.
