James Dale Pickering, 72, of Gulfport, went to be with the Lord on August 9, 2008.
He was a native of Hebron, MS, and a resident of Gulfport since 1966.
Dale retired from the Mississippi Department of Transportation in 1997 after 38 years. He attended Bayou View Baptist Church in Gulfport. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, and was a member of the American Legion Post in Laurel.
He was the second of six children, five boys and one girl. Preceding him in death were his parents, John Sharp Pickering and Nola Mae Todd Pickering; and three brothers, Herman, J. B., and Willis. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Shelbie Jean Smith Pickering; son, Steve (Bridget), and grandson, Christopher Sharp Pickering; one brother, Jerrell; one sister, Barbara Alice Pickering; mother-in-law, Willie Mae Smith; and many loving nieces, nephews, and friends.
The family would like to express sincere thanks to Dr. Davidson and his staff for their care and compassion given to Dale throughout his battle with lung cancer.
Dale chose to donate his body to the University of Mississippi Medical Center for research.

A memorial service will be conducted at Bayou View Baptist Church in Gulfport at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 16, 2008.
