James Ernest Owen, Jr., age 66, a native of Phenix City, AL and a resident of Gulfport, passed away on July 29, 2018.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Ernest Owen, Sr. and Estelle Bain Owen.
He is survived by his wife, Patsy Reyer Owen of Gulfport; children, James Ernest Owen III (Jenny), Elizabeth Ann Owen Woodfin, Matthew Lee Owen, Patrick Casey Owen, Aimee Marie Reyer Clute (Apostle T.R. Clute), and Kevin Charles "Chuck" Reyer; grandchildren, Ryan Owen, Noah Owen, Samuel Woodfin, Hank Woodfin, Daniel Clute, Shelby Clute, and Wesley Clute; and siblings, Mark Randall Owen, Steven Lee Owen (Melanie) and Sandra Kay Coker.
Jim received BS and Master's degrees in Education and an Ed. D. (Doctorate in Educational Leadership), all from Auburn University. He was assistant principal and principal in the Auburn, Alabama and Decatur, Georgia school systems. Jim was President and CEO of Hog Mountain Creations in Duluth, GA and worked at Austal Shipyard in Mobile, AL.
He had a strong work ethic and was driven to succeed. Due to his achievements in the field of education, Jim was one of the youngest principals in Auburn City Schools. As a teacher, he researched alternative ways to interest children in learning to read.
Jim was an extremely creative person. He excelled in many areas, from gardening/landscaping, to developing educational games, to playing music, building things, and painting. Jim played Tuba in the Phenix City High School Marching Band and the Auburn University Marching Band. When he was principal at Cary Woods Elementary in Auburn, Jim painted large murals on the walls, to the delight of many students. He was a lover of Auburn football, always watching and attending many games. He was a member of The River of Life Church in Gulfport.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 4, 2018 at the RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Rd., Gulfport at 2:00 PM, with a visitation for family and friends from 12:00 PM until the service. Burial will follow at Evergreen Gardens Cemetery.
