Mr. James H. Hood, age 71, resident of Gulfport, passed away on Thursday, September 18, 2008, in Gulfport.
Mr. Hood was born and reared in Monroe County, MS, graduating from Amory High School and Mississippi State University, where he was a member of the track team and the M Club. He was in the ROTC at MSU and was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Army before retiring from the Mississippi National Guard after 23 years, achieving the rank of Lt. Col. He was an employee of Hatley Sportswear and Blue Bell, Inc. garment manufacturer. He was a high school referee for football games in North MS and coached Little League baseball through the American Legion Level. He taught school at Aldine Junior High School in Houston, TX and at the community college in Bethel, Alaska. He was a licensed Real Estate Agent for over 25 years. He lived on the Coast for the last 20 years. He taught business courses and coached football and track at D'Iberville and St. John High Schools. He was a deacon at First Baptist Church-Gulfport where he was also a member of the choir.
He was preceded in death by his father, Halbert Ray Hood, and his sister, Louise Farrell.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Jeanne Hood of Gulfport; mother, Mary Jewel Hood of Meridian; children, Bradley Hood of Warren, MI, and Jeffrey Hood (Kim) of Houston, MS; sister, Doris Fields of Meridian; 4 grandchildren, Jake Hood, Shelby Hood, Nolen Hood, and Carley Hood.
Visitation will be held on Friday, September 19, 2008, at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport, where friends may call from 6-8 pm.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at First Baptist Church of Gulfport, Highway 605, at 11 am, where friends may visit from 9-11 am. This will be followed by a service at E.E. Pickle Funeral Home Chapel in Amory, on Monday, September 22, 2008 at 11:00 a.m.
