James L. Crowder, 82, of Long Beach, MS passed away on April 25, 2014.
James was born to Eugene and Winnie Crowder on March 26, 1932 in Boyle, MS. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army who served during the Vietnam War. During his service in the Army, he was stationed in London, Iwo Jima, Germany, Oregon, Washington, D.C. and Hawaii. Upon his retirement from the Army, he and his family settled in Long Beach where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. He worked as a registered nurse at Garden Park Hospital, Memorial Hospital, and the Veteran's Administration in Biloxi. He ended his nursing career at the Veteran's Administration in Gulfport.
James was an avid country music fan with a particular love of all things Roy Acuff. An unexpected highlight of his life was being on the same airplane as Roy Acuff's band. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, son and brother. His children and grandchildren share many fond memories of trips to the beach, lively political discussions, and being taught to play spades and poker.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers William Crowder, Charlie ""Dink"" Crowder and Archie Crowder and his sisters Ruth Holmes and Ollie Reindel.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lucile Williams Crowder; daughters Diane (John) Taylor of Jackson, MS, Jenny Crowder of Long Beach, MS and son, Joseph Crowder of Long Beach, MS, grandchildren Allan Bennett of Minneapolis, MN, Julia Bennett of Atlanta, GA and Holden Crowder of Bendale, MS, sister Sue (Tony) LePoma of Biloxi, MS, brother, Albert (Emily) Crowder of Gulfport, MS, family friend Shelley Dalrymple of Long Beach, MS and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 29, 2014, beginning at 12:00 at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 19130 Commission Road in Long Beach. The memorial service will be held at 2:00 in the Riemann Family Funeral Home Chapel. Burial with U.S. Army honors will follow at the Long Beach City Cemetery.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff of the Rio Grande wing of the Community Living Center at the VA Medical Center in Biloxi.
