Mr. Larry Childers, age 71, of Gulfport, passed away on Monday, December 19, 2011, at home with his family by his side.
Mr. Childers was born in Benton County, MS to Tid and Leola Brody Childers. He was a graduate of Ashland High School in Ashland, MS, Northwest Junior College, The University of Alabama, and the Memphis Police Academy. He was proud of his service as a former police officer for the City of Memphis. In 1981 he began his work for the Southern Company, where he worked as Manager of Corporate Security until his retirement in 2003. During this time period, Larry worked with various local law enforcement agencies in conducting criminal investigations. Mr. Childers was a commissioned law enforcement officer with many agencies in MS and AL, working 40 years in public service. Following retirement, he worked as Executive Vice President for Swetman Security Service. He attended First Baptist Church in Biloxi and was an avid outdoorsman. Hunting was a favorite pastime. Family was most important to Larry. He took his grandsons every other week to get their hair cut at Raybourn's Barber Shop. His willingness to help others and his love for his family will be deeply missed.
He was preceded in death by his father and his sister, Sherry Evans.
He is survived by his wife, Cindy Payne Childers of Gulfport; children, Monica Childers Green (Jeff) of Ripley, MS, Melissa Hayes of AL, Windy Swetman (Jon'elle) of Biloxi, Stephanie Swetman Irby (Chad) of Biloxi, Heather Swetman Boudreaux (Brandon) of Biloxi; mother, Leola Brody Childers of Ashland, MS; siblings, Brody Childers of Ashland, MS, and Madeline Ward of Ripley, MS; grandchildren, Carol Ormon, Courtney Grisham, Carley Green, Eryn and Lilium Irby, Winfield and John Christian Swetman, Jaxson, John Colton, and Mollie Boudreaux; great grandchildren, Mady Ormon and Zadie Grisham.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 21, 2011, at First Baptist Church of Biloxi from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. in the church sanctuary. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
