James A. Caire, age 90, M/Sgt, USAF, Retired, died June 17, 2009 in Biloxi, Mississippi. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on January 7, 1919. He retired from the United States Air Force with 24 years of service, and 21 years of federal civil service with the SeaBees. He served at many bases in the United States, Europe, and Japan.
He was a member of the Hq and HqSqd, 27th Bomb Gp(L) of the Army/Air Force during the Second World War. During the war, in 1942, he was captured by the Japanese on the Bataan Peninsula on the island of Luzon in the Philippines, and survived the aÌâÅBataan Death March.aÌâ
For forty months, he was held as a prisoner of war in the following camps: OaÌââ¢Donnell, Lumbon, Cabonatuan, Ft. McKinley, Port Area of Manila in the Philippine Islands, and at Oeyama, Japan. In 1945, he was liberated and returned to the United States.
He was a member of the following organizations: Mississippi Gulf Coast Chapter of the American Ex-Prisoners of War, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, Military Order of the Purple Heart, American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor, and The Retired Enlisted Association. He was a member of Christus Victor Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his devoted wife Anna of 68 years; two sons, William and Beauvais; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Andrew.
James was a dedicated family man and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
The funeral service will be held at 9:00 a.m., on Monday, June 22, 2009 at the RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 274 Beauvoir Road, Biloxi. Burial with full military honors will follow at Biloxi National Cemetery.
