Jake Hertzog

Jacob (Jake) F. Hertzog, Jr., age 72, of Long Beach, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2007 at Memorial Hospital in Gulfport.
Born November 11, 1934 in West Lawn, PA to Jacob and Julia, he was one of three children.
Mr. Hertzog is preceded in death by his parents and sister Dot Kempton. He is survived by his brother Bill Hertzog of Pittsburgh, PA.
Jake graduated from Wilson High School in West Lawn, PA and earned a degree in graphic art from Dean College in Franklin, MA. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1954 and was first stationed in North Carolina and later at Keesler AFB. Following the service, he began a 32-year carer at Keesler in civil service as a graphics illustrator and managing the training aides department. While working at Keesler, he took art classes at Delgado Community College in New Orleans and completed additional coursework at Keesler through the University of Southern Mississippi. In addition to his job at Keesler, he designed, painted, and installed signs for many coast businesses and lettered commercial vehicles and recreational boats. Following retirement from civil service, he worked in the same capacity for various government contractors at Keesler. For a time, he owned and operated Jake's Signs and Designs in downtown Long Beach.
Jake was active in his communtiy, serving for years in the Long Beach Carnival Association, St. Thomas Home School Association, and Long Beach Jaycees. For years he directed the Long Beach Carnival Association's Mardi Gras parade and designed the annual doubloon for over 20 years.
Jake loved life, music and art, but first and foremost was his family.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Faye Sellier Hertzog, his four children, Valerie (Darrell) Holloway of Melbourne, FL, Dottie (Danny) Kelly of Gulfport; Bill (Kari) Hertzog of Long Beach and Scott (Amy) Hertzog of White Bluff, TN; and four grandchildren, Jessa 16, Chris 11, Matthew 6 and Lillian 3.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to St. Thomas Catholic Church, Rebuild St. Thomas Fund, P.O. Box 1529, Long Beach, MS 39560.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held today, Saturday, January 6, 2007 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Thomas Catholic Church on Daugherty Road in Long Beach, where friends may visit an hour before Mass. Burial will follow at Live Oak Cemetery in Pass Christian.
