Irma Lillian Reinike, age 82 and resident of Hattiesburg, MS, passed away on July 18, 2010, in Gulfport, Mississippi.
She was a member of one of the founding families of Long Beach, a founding member of St. Thomas Church and one of the first students in St. Thomas Catholic School, a graduate of St. John High School and graduated from St. MaryaÌ‚â‚â„¢s Dominican College in New Orleans. During WWII she was a USO girl in Biloxi.
After the war she modeled in New Orleans, was active in the theatre, wrote a column for the Illustrated Press and a New Orleans radio personality. She returned to Long Beach, worked for Keesler Air Force Base, edited the paper for the MCB No. 62 in Gulfport, and clerked at the VA center in Gulfport. She returned to New Orleans and retired with the Army Corp of Engineers, having worked as a civilian employee for all four branches of the service.
A member of WhoaÌ‚â‚â„¢s Who of the Southeast and the United
Stes, she was a lifelong poet, artist, and writer. Her writings are in the permanent collections of the National D-Day Museum and her paintings had exhibitions in various galleries.
She was named an Honored Author by the Louisiana Library Association in 1994 and a Patron of the Le Petit Theatre de Vieux Carre. She will be remembered for her love of family, a lifetime of literary achievement, and a devotion to her Catholic faith.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Chester and Edna Reinike; her sisters Henrietta Reinike, Marie Cassidy, Thelma Bistes, and Mildred Perrier; and brothers Victor Reinike and Bernard Reinike.
Survivors include her daughter Jewell Hoffman; her sons Harvey Shows, Jr. and David Shows; her sisters Catherine Cooper, Betty Dubiusson, and Delores Hendon; and brother Vernon Reinike; and 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Friday, July 23, 2010, from 7pm to 9pm at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 19130 Commission Road, Long Beach.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, July 24, 2010, at St. John Catholic Church in Gulfport at 10am. Burial will follow at Long Beach City Cemetery.
