Ignatius Catalano, a proud and dedicated veteran of the United States Navy, passed away on April 10, 2025, in Gulfport, Mississippi, at the age of 79. Born on May 2, 1945, in Brooklyn, New York, Ignatius was a graduate of Valley Stream Central High School, where he built a strong foundation for a life characterized by service, hard work, and integrity.
Ignatius honorably served in the U.S. Navy as a member of the Seabee Construction Battalion for 23 years, eventually attaining the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer. During his service, he utilized his skills as an electrician to contribute significantly to building and supporting military operations around the globe. His distinguished military career was highlighted by a multitude of honors and accolades, including the prestigious Republic of Vietnam and the Meritorious Unit Commendation Gallantry Cross. He received numerous medals in recognition of his commitment and performance, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, and Good Conduct Medal, among others. His efforts were further acknowledged with ribbons for Combat Action and Sea Service Deployment, reflecting his courageous contributions to his country.
After retiring from the military, he went on to serve in various roles within the church, making a lasting impact on those around him. He was a dedicated you leader at Coastland Christian Center and Brodie Road Baptist Church. He was honored to serve on the Board of Trustees at Popps Ferry Baptist Church and also led Bible studies at local assisted living facilities. In each of these roles, he inspired and influenced countless youth and seniors, leaving a legacy of faith, service, and compassion.
Throughout his life, Ignatius pursued various hobbies that brought him joy and fulfillment. An avid reader, he found comfort and inspiration in the pages of espionage and mystery novels. He had a passion for cooking, often experimenting with new recipes to create delicious meals for family and friends. Additionally, his creative spirit found expression through woodworking, where he crafted essential pieces that displayed both skill and patience.
He is survived by his two daughters, Elizabeth Catalano of Biloxi, Mississippi, and Gina Catalano of Raleigh, North Carolina. Ignatius is also survived by his brother Philip S. Catalano and sister-in-law Cathy Ogierno Catalano of San Diego, California, along with his sister-in-law Karen (Ronan) Catalano of Long Island, New York, and two nieces and three nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Philip and Pietrina Caruso Catalano, and his brother Joseph Catalano.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his memory will live on in the lives he touched, the faith he shared, and the example of love and service he set for others. Though he is no longer with us, his spirit and the lessons he imparted will remain in our hearts forever. Rest in peace, knowing you have left an indelible mark on the world.
