Hubert Ray McMillan, USN, was born April 23, 1944 in Gainesville, GA and passed away on Thursday, July 19, 2007 at the age of 63 in Commerce, GA, where he relocated after Hurricane Katrina. For more than 25 years, he lived in Long Beach, MS.
He was preceded in death by his parents Ray and Lucy Faye Bolding McMillan; an infant son; and Cameron McMillan, his infant grandson.
Hubert is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Jackie Marie Bailey McMillan of Commerce, GA; his children Jeffrey and his wife Janice, and their two sons, Zachary and Ian, of Mobile, AL; Mark and his wife Karen, and their three children, Michael, Bridget, and Andrew McMillan, of Long Beach, MS; his step-mother Adrienne McMillan, of Chattanooga, TN; his siblings, Izetta Bradberry and her husband Bill of Commerce, GA; Elva McClure and her husband Bob of Calhoun, GA; Tami Buchanan and her husband Richard, Lakewood, CO, Alisa Hedrick and her husband Larry of Chattanooga, TN, as well as friends that he loved like family, having known them for more than 40 years, Joe and Donna Caine of Harpersville, AL.
Hubert loved and cherished his wife and family. He was never happier than when he was spending time with them. Some of his favorite memories included trips to the mountains with his wife and Joe and Donna Caine, wherever they could take a scenic route; cruises with his sisters and their families, and going to the movies with his grandkids. He also loved helping others through his work with the Lions Club, and other civic organizations.
He served proudly in the US Navy for 25 years as a dental prosthetic technician. During his time in the service, he was stationed in Gulfport, MS; San Diego, CA; Chicago, IL; Camp LeJeune, NC, and Okinawa, Japan. While at the CBC in Gulfport, he was awarded the CBCaÌââ¢s Sailor the Quarter and Sailor of the Year 1972, awards that highlighted exemplary achievement beyond the call of duty. After retiring from the Navy, he operated the successful McMillan Dental Lab, where his son Mark worked with him, before Hubert retired in 2006.
A memorial service will be held at Oconee Baptist Church in Commerce, GA, at 2 pm on Saturday, July 21 for family and friends in the Georgia area.
There will be a memorial service at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Long Beach, MS with visitation beginning at 11:00 am and the service at 12:00 pm on Friday, July 27, 2007. Internment will follow at Biloxi National Cemetery.
