CW3, Homer Julian Thacker, Jr, (US Army – Retired), age 75, passed away on October 11, 2024 in Mobile, Alabama at the University of Alabama Medical Center. He was born in San Antonio, Texas to Homer Thacker, Sr. and Audrey Jock Johnson, and grew up and attended school in Pikeville, Kentucky. At the age of 18 he enlisted in the United States Army, serving his country for 24 years, until retirement in 1991. During his distinguished service he was awarded the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, among many others.
He was a longtime resident of Gulfport and was previously owner/ operator of Cheers Lounge. He loved enjoying a cold beer, playing darts and watching football. He was known to be a very friendly and simple man, and was loved my so many who will miss him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Homer J. Thacker Sr,. and Audrey J. Johnson; son, Dennis Thacker; and sisters, Betty Alice Thacker and Linda Jo Thacker Pike.
He is survived by his daughter, Angie A. LaFollette (Bret) of Blissfield, MI; two grandchildren, Lauren Thacker (US Air Force) of Washington D.C., and Ashley Thacker of Hawaii; sister, Lora C. Thacker Stamper; former spouse of 20 years and mother of his children, Karin Thacker of Comins, MI; former daughter-in-law, Delilah Bengochea Carter; and numerous nieces and nephews, including a very special niece who shared the same birthday, Ladonna Hatfield.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at 1:30 PM on Wednesday, October 16, 2024 at Biloxi National Cemetery, 400 Veterans Ave. Biloxi, MS. The procession to the cemetery will begin at 1:00 pm, and will leave from Riemann Family Funeral Home, 274 Beauvoir Rd. Biloxi, MS 39503.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Wounded Warriors project.
