Lt. Colonel Herman ""Hurki"" Herfurth, USAF, Ret. of Biloxi, MS, passed away peacefully at home on February 10, 2015.
He was born on February 28, 1918 to Paul and Elizabeth Herfurth of Hartford, Connecticut. He graduated from Hartford Public High School where during his sophomore year in 1933, he bicycled all the way to the World's Fair in Chicago. Later he was employed at Pratt Whitney Measurement Systems where he began a machinist apprenticeship and was eventually promoted to foreman. He was a fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force and served tours in England and Japan. The Hartford Times wrote several articles on him, one of which described how he and his fellow American Thunderbolt pilots disregarded their low fuel supplies to help the Liberator bombers fight off an enemy attack. Hurki retired from the U.S. Air Force after 20 years, many of which were at Keesler Air Force Base. He then worked 18 years at GE and NASA.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Terese Baranosky Herfurth, and his step son, Craig Culver.
He is survived by his daughters, Kathy (Anthony) Polite, Susan (Mitch) Willoughby, and Jacqueline Herfurth; his son, Paul (Mary Jayne) Herfurth; grandchildren, Craig ""Rusty"" (Kristen) Culver, Stacie Culver, Ryan Culver and James Culver; and great-grandchildren, Craig III ""Trey"" Culver, Carson Culver, and Case Culver.
