Henry Joseph DaÌââ¢Aquilla Sr., 69, died Wednesday, August 16, 2006, at Memorial Hospital in Gulfport.
A Woodville, Miss., native, he lived in Long Beach for 43 years and had a successful career as an educator. He was a guidance counselor at Long Beach High School and was a longtime teacher and successful coach at St. John High School. He also served on the Long Beach and St. Thomas Elementary school boards and was a former trustee of the Mississippi School for the Deaf and Blind.
He retired as director of conferences and workshops for the University of Southern Mississippi, Gulf Park. He was elected Harrison County Election Commissioner for one term and was appointed to the Harrison County Development Commission. He served on the Tidewater Commission for the state of Mississippi.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sylvester and Alma DaÌââ¢Aquilla Sr.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Carolyn May DaÌââ¢Aquilla; three sons, Hank DaÌââ¢Aquilla, and his wife Beth, of Long Beach, David DaÌââ¢Aquilla, and his wife Jennifer, of Long Beach, and Alan DaÌââ¢Aquilla, and his wife Caja, of St. Augustine, Fla.; his brother, Sylvester DaÌââ¢Aquilla Jr., of Biloxi, and his wife Clara, and his sister Yvonne Dooley of St. Francisville, La., and her husband Thomas; three grandchildren, Anna, Sarah and Aaron, all of Long Beach; and 13 nieces and nephews.
Visitation is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 19, 2006, from 10 a.m. until a noon funeral mass, with all services at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Pass Christian.
Burial will follow at Gulf Pines Memorial Gardens in Long Beach.
