Dr. Henry Black

Dr. Henry Wendell Black of Gulfport, passed away on Thursday, June 15, 2023, at the age of 86.  A native of Houston, Texas, Henry was a resident of Gulfport for 65 years.

He served in the USAF (’53-’66) and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. 

After leaving the service, Henry earned a BA degree in general education, an MA degree and a Ph.D. in history. He was an instructor at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in Gulfport for 30 years. His hobbies included reading, model plane making, puzzles, fishing, and watching the news and sports.

Henry was preceded in death by his father, Walter Black, his mother, Esther Haacksma, and a brother, Everett Black.

He is survived by his children, Michael (Julie) Black, and Sarah Black, his stepdaughter Beth Buford, Debbie, Stacy, David, and Diane, and his grandchildren, Hannah and Bradley Black, Megan, Ashley, Sean, Amy, and Jacob. He is also survived by Susan Pagano, mother of Michael, Sarah, and Beth.

Friends are invited to join the family for visitation and services on Monday, June 26, 2023, at Riemann Family Funeral Home, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport, MS. Visitation will be from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., with the service to follow at 1:00 p.m.

Dr. Black will be laid to rest at Biloxi National Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. with military honors rendered by the U.S. Air Force.
