Helen Walker

d. May 1, 2017

Helen Peterson Walker left this earth and joined our Heavenly Father, on May 1, 2017. Her only son, Jim, remembered, "She exemplified the Greatest Generation, and was the most caring, benevolent person I have ever known. Her faith in God never wavered.
She was an honorable woman, and when she saw a wrong, would fight to right it."
Helen's lifelong dedication to serving others was evident in her very long, diversified career. She served in the Gulfport School system in the early years, followed by her commitment to public service as an integral part of the administrations of Mayors R.B. (Billy) Meadows, and Phillip Shaw. Upon her retirement from the Veterans Administration Gulf Coast Health Care System in 2005, she was recognized and acknowledged as being "the Anchor of the Biloxi Chaplaincy" for 25 years. She was elected to the Board of Directors of the Gulf Coast Community Federal Credit Union, actively serving for 40 years. In 2013, she became the first woman to be inducted into the Mississippi Credit Union Association Hall of Fame. She was a lifelong member of Coalville United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her father, Ludwig (Louie) Peterson, Winnie Peterson (mother), Peter Peterson (brother), Elvin Peterson (brother), Odeal (Row Row) Holley (sister), and her loving husband of 67 years, James E. (Jimmy) Walker.
Cherishing a lifetime of loving memories, she is survived by her devoted son, James E. (Jim) Walker, Jr. (Elizabeth); two grandchildren, James E. (Nick) Walker, III, Amanda M. Shook (Jeremy); Austin Taylor Shook ( great grandson); Louise P. Maslowski (sister); one niece, Mary Lou (Boo) Saucier (Rusty); Kenny Maslowski (nephew), along with numerous family members and loving friends.
A deep, heartfelt thank you to Lakeview Nursing Center for their love and care these last few years. And a special thanks, to the staffs of Select Specialty Hospital and Canon Hospice, for their compassionate, continuous care in her final days.
