Helen M. Schruff Schmitt went to be with our Lord Monday morning on April 30th. She was 80 years old.
She was a lifelong resident of Pass Christian until she fell ill and lived the remainder of her life with her daughter in Long Beach. She attended St. Joseph Catholic School in Pass Christian then she met and fell in love with Lawson J. Schmitt and they were married for 49 years until his death in 1998. She was the wonderful mother of 4 children, 9 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren who will miss her tremendously. Mrs. Schmitt was the heart of her family and taught them so much about love and giving. She loved to cook and held many family gatherings.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawson J. Schmitt, her parents, Louis Schruff, Sr. and Ida Mae Wise Schruff, her brothers, Herman (Florence) Schruff, Louis (Shirley) Schruff, Sr., and Frank Schruff all of Pass Christian, her sisters, Agnes (Forrest) Anderson, Elizabeth (Frank) Kowalski, of Pass Christian, and Irma May (Walter) Ivey, of Summerville, GA.
She is survived by her 2 sons, Ronald James (Debbie) Schmitt and Kenneth Joseph (Mandy) Schmitt, 2 daughters, Gewndy A. (Danny) Cole and Sandra A. (Scott) Parker, 9 grandchildren, Ronnie (Mindy), Timmy (Melissa), Ava and Alec Schmitt, Scotty and Mickey Cole, Ally Parker, and Michael and Joshua Turan, 5 great-grandchildren, Chandler Scarborough, Cara, Kelly, and Wyatt Cole, and Bailee Schmitt, and numerous nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.
Visitation will be Thursday, May 3, 2012 from 11 am - 1 pm at St. Thomas Catholic Church, 720 East Beach Blvd., Long Beach. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 pm in the church. Intermen will be in Gulf Pines Memorial Gardens.
The family would like to acknowledge the caring ladies who came to our home from Camilla Home Health and Dr. Northington and the staff at Memorial Hospital's ICU and 4th floor nursing staff. Your kindness will always be remembered. Also, to Dr. David LaRosa and staff for caring for her for years - thank you all so much.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
