Helen McIntosh (affectionately known as “Hanny”), age 91, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, January 18, 2025. She was preceded in death by her parents, James O McIntosh and Myrtie Mae Tucker McIntosh, and her brother, James O McIntosh, Jr. She is survived by her sister, Mildred Quinn, and four nieces, Jeanne, Judy, Janet and Marylin.
Hanny dedicated over 30 years of her life as a PE teacher and later as a guidance counselor at Gulfport High School, where she became a cornerstone of the school community. She guided students through the rollercoaster of high school life, their career aspirations, and, occasionally, their emotional meltdowns. To say she touched the lives of countless students is an understatement; she embodied what it means to be a true counselor.
Tough as nails, Hanny was never afraid to give you the hard truths, but she always did so with a heart full of empathy and an unshakable belief in your potential. Students knew she was the one to turn to when life got messy, and many still credit her guidance for helping them through their most challenging times. Behind the scenes, she was a fierce advocate for her kids—though administrators might remember her as someone who wasn’t shy about pointing out their shortcomings.
Hanny’s impact extended beyond her students. She was a force of nature, a second mom to many, and a person whose honesty, kindness, and sense of humor left an indelible mark on everyone lucky enough to know her. Gulfport High School, her family, and the countless lives she shaped will never forget her.
Hanny will be laid to rest with her family at a private ceremony at a later date.
The Riemann Family Funeral Home, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport, is serving the family.
