Harry Rourke Hull, Jr, age 83, of Pass Christian, passed away on February 9, 2021.
He was born in New Orleans, LA on April 28, 1937 to Harry R. Hull, Sr. and Evelyn Hull. He attended St. Matthias Grammar School and completed high school and two years of Junior college at St. Joseph Seminary in St. Benedict. LA. He spent one year at Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans, after which he enrolled in Loyola University where he obtained his law degree in 1963. Following admission to the Louisiana Bar, Harry joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served as a Staff Legal Officer for four years, including a tour in Vietnam. Following his discharge, he worked as an Assistant District Attorney for Orleans Parish and then served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in New Orleans. He went into private practice for several years, but once again returned to the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office where he served as Chief of the Juvenile Division.
In 1981, he went back to college and in 1983 received a Bachelor of Science in Math Education. Following in the footsteps of his grandmother Alice Rourke Hull, he became a high school math teacher. As much as he enjoyed the practice of law, his true calling was teaching. Harry moved to Pass Christian in 1984 and commenced his 30 year career at Our Lady Academy in Bay St. Louis. No one loved what he did for a living more than Harry. He would never have called it “work.” In addition to teaching math, Harry was also involved in the athletic program at OLA and proudly enjoyed his title of “Coach Hull.” Of his many accomplishments, perhaps the greatest honor of his life was having OLA establish the Coach Hull Award, which is given each year to the best all around athlete.
Harry was a devout Catholic who truly lived the tenants of his religion. Believing that we are all created in God’s image, he always saw the good in others. In addition, he took great pleasure in family gatherings and a good meal, frequently complementing the cook with a pronouncement that he or she served “good groceries.” All who joined him at the table looked forward to hearing one of his creative graces before meals. He was good company, full of good stories, funny jokes, and bad puns.
Harry is survived by his sisters, Adelaide H. Nolan, Mandeville, LA, and Mary H. Tooker (Tom), Diamondhead; his brothers, Dr. John E. Hull, Monroe, LA, and James E. Hull, Covington, LA; and many nieces and nephews who adored their Uncle Harry.
Due to the Covid virus, the family will hold a private funeral service. Harry will return to his beloved St. Ben’s, which he always called his “spiritual home” where he will be buried in the St. Joseph Abbey Cemetery. The family hopes to hold a memorial mass in his honor at a future date.
