Harold (Bud) Sorgenfrei, Jr., 89, of Diamondhead, Mississippi, passed away on Friday, April 18, 2014.
Bud was preceded in death by his first wife, Lura Belle Souder Sorgenfrei; his parents, Harold E. Sorgenfrei and Flo Sorgenfrei; and his brother, Max Sorgenfrei.
He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Bobbie Sorgenfrei of Diamondhead, MS. He is the father of Steven D. Sorgenfrei (Kimberly), Mark A. Sorgenfrei (Dale), Karen S. Shudak (Larry), David W. Sorgenfrei (Yvonne); stepfather to Carol Ann Kuester (Tom), Curtis Wayne Dalton (Darlene), and Cathie Sue Leezy (Jack). He is also survived by his brother, Robert Sorgenfrei of Santa Maria, California; and a combined 16 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
Bud was born in Albion, Indiana and proudly served his country as a combat infantryman in the armored division, United States Army, and participated in the final liberation of Europe during World War II in 1944 and 1945. He received several commendations for his service.
Following the War, he furthered his education by graduating from Indiana University with both Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Geology and was thereafter employed by Texaco Oil Company as a Geologist, first in Lafayette, La. and then New Orleans. After his retirement from Texaco, Bud remained a geologist consultant for several years to Carl Oil and Gas and other local independent oil and gas exploration companies.
A resident of the West Bank of New Orleans for much of his adult life, Bud was a charter member of the Aurora United Methodist Church, the Aurora Country Club, and several national and local professional Geophysical organizations.
Retiring in Diamondhead, Mississippi, Bud was a former member of the Diamondhead Fire Department, The Diamondhead Chapter of the United States Veterans of Foreign Wars, an active member of Diamondhead Community Church (Presbyterian) and several carnival and social organizations.
As a golfer, he was a member of the DMGA and Jaumot Saturday morning group. He and Bobbie were also members of the MS Senior's Golf Association.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 29, 2014, at Diamondhead Community Church, at 11:00 a.m. A reception will follow in the church's Fellowship Hall. Memorials may be made to Diamondhead Community Church, 5301 Diamondhead Cir., Diamondhead, MS 39525.
Burial with U. S. Army honors will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Biloxi National Cemetery.
