On Tuesday, May 16, 2023, Harlon Ray Bennett, Sr., loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at the age of 84. Harlon was born on August 31, 1938, in Bay St. Louis, MS, to Sidney Sr. and Etheline Bennett.
On April 26, 1957, Harlon married Opal Marie Lee. They have five children: Etheline, Ray, Juanita (David), Scott, and Angela (Barry). They also have eleven grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. Harlon is preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, Sidney Jr., Josie, and Margaret, and his granddaughter, Morgan.
Harlon was a long-time resident of Kiln, MS. He joined the Navy in 1957 and served 4 years on the USS Kersarge. He loved hunting, fishing, and camping, but most of all he loved shrimping. For 25 years, prior to hurricane Katrina, he owned and captained shrimp boats: the Crystal Lynn and the Master Chris.
Services will be held on Friday, May 19, 2023, at Annunciation Catholic Church, 5370 Kiln Delisle Road, Kiln, MS. Visitation for family will be held from 12:30 to 1:00 p.m. Visitation for friends will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. Harlon will be laid to rest at Bayou Coco Cemetery, with a Celebration of Life to follow immediately after at the Parish Hall.
