Hale Columbus Booth II, of Gulfport, died May 7, 2009, at Gulfport.
He was 81 years old and was preceded in death by his parents, Jeffie Mae (Boggan) and Hale C. Booth, of Weir, Mississippi.
Booth was born February 14, 1928, in Ackerman, Mississippi. Booth attended Mississippi State University and majored in Forestry. He began his business career in Choctaw County, Mississippi, as a timber man and owned and operated the Weir Lumber Company until it was destroyed by fire in 1958. Hale Booth then began a career as an insurance adjuster with General Adjustment Bureau, which brought him to Gulfport in 1970 as branch manager. Booth was skilled in working to bring people together and, after retiring from GAB, he continued to work in the local insurance industry until the past few years.
Booth always enjoyed the outdoors and loved to hunt and fish, as well as boating and travel. After retirement, he enjoyed traveling in the motor home and he and Sylvia spent one summer in Alaska. He had visited all fifty states. Booth was a Mason and member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Gulfport where he was involved in church activities and local mission outreach programs. He was very supportive and enjoyed working with the Mississippi Gulf Coast YMCA.
H.C. Booth is survived by his wife, Sylvia; three sons, Hale C. Booth III and wife, Susan, Vincent Hodges and his wife, LuAnn, Randy Hodges and his wife, Tessie; and ten grandchildren, Rebecca Booth, Hannah Booth, Andrew Hodges, Tyler Hodges, JoAnn Hodges, Philip Gibson, Henry Gibson, Michael Aquino, RoxAnn Aquino and Brian Aquino.
The family requests that memorials be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 5007 Lawson Ave., Gulfport, MS 39507; or the Mississippi Gulf Coast YMCA.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2009 at 3:00 PM at Trinity United Methodist Church, Gulfport, where family and friends may visit from 2:00 PM until service time. Burial will follow at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
