Guida Thomas Lloyd, age 92, passed away on Monday, May 2, 2011.
Ms. Lloyd was born October 22, 1918 in Biloxi, MS. She was the daughter of Mark Thomas, Sr. and Guida Karlson Thomas. She was the beloved wife of John B. Lloyd for 61 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband ; parents; brothers, Mark Thomas, Jr., Colonel Octave F.V. Thomas, and Captain Norman Karlson Thomas.
She is survived by her sons, John B. Lloyd, Jr. and wife Cheryl F. Lloyd of Brandon, MS and Norman K. Lloyd and wife Kathryn L. Lloyd of Mandeville, LA; two grandchildren, Lindsay Donaghe and husband Tad, and Christopher Lloyd; one great grandson, Avynn Donaghe; and six nieces and nephews.
Ms. Lloyd was a resident of Long Beach, MS since 1926. She graduated from Long Beach High School and Gulf Park Junior College for Girls in Long Beach. She attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN and received her Bachelor of Science degree from George Peabody Teachers College of Vanderbilt. She then attended graduate work at Vanderbilt until the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and the course she was studying was closed for the duration.
She began her year of teaching in Long Beach schools but later joined the faculty at Orange Grove in Harrison County where she met her husband and they were married on October 28, 1942 while he served hi s duty in the U.S. Navy until WWII ended.
In 1943, she became one of the first women instructors in the Army Air Force at Gulfport Field and Keesler Field in Biloxi. In 1952, she returned to teaching in Long Beach schools where she taught for 22 years. She received a Masters Degree at the University of Southern Mississippi in counseling and psychology. For twelve years, she was a counselor at Long Beach High. She retired in 1981. In 2003, after her husband's death, she has resided at the Windsor Assisted Living Center and the Wynwood Assistant Living Center in Mandeville, LA.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2011, from 12 to 2 PM, with the service at 2:00 PM. Both will be held at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 19130 Commission Rd., Long Beach. Burial will take place at Gulf Pine Memorial Gardens.
