Grady Terrol """"Terry"""" Rainey, age 67, passed away Tuesday, January 29, 2008 in Gulfport.
Terry was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a Christian and attended Gulf Coast Worship Center in Long Beach. Terry was born in Meridian, MS and had lived on the coast for 33 years. He graduated from Meridian High School and received a degree in Aerospace Engineering from Mississippi State University. He served in the Navy aboard U.S.S. Springfield (CLG7) as a 3rd class Radarman in the Operations Intelligence Division. The area of operation for the Springfield was the Mediterranean, with her homeport being Villa, France. His time in the Navy was important to him and he and his wife, Dee, attended the U.S.S. Springfield Bluejackets Reunions across the country for the past 15 years. Terry began his career as a design engineer and was involved in the space program for over 36 years. He received numerous awards for his contributions to manned space flight including the First Shuttle Flight Achievement Award, the Shuttle-MIR Program Contribution Award and the Silver Snoopy Award. He was instrumental in the Apollo program and the first man on the moon. He retired in 2002 from Rocketdyne/Boeing at Stennis Space Center as a lead test engineer of rocket propulsion engines and returned later as a consultant.
He was preceded in death by his parents,Grady L. and Vashti Rainey.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Dee Rainey of Gulfport; son, Chris and his wife, Paula, of Saucier; son, David and his wife, Diane, of Long Beach; daughter, Janet and her husband, Alfredo, of Augusta, GA; 7 grandchildren, Ryan and Aaron Rainey of Saucier, Bailey, Cami and Reagan Rainey of Long Beach, Nicholas and Olivia Marton of Augusta, GA; and one sister, Penny Nichols of Meridian.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, January 31, 2008 at Gulf Coast Worship Center on 28th Street in Long Beach. A private burial will be at a later date. RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport is in charge of arrangements.
