Mr. Gordon Don Allen, Sr., age 80, resident of Gulfport, passed away on Tuesday, March 31, 2009, in Gulfport.
Mr. Allen was a native of Gulfport, born to the late Colon and Audrey Creel Allen in 1928. He graduated from Gulfport High School and served in the U.S. Army in the Korean War, where he earned a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He owned Allen Plumbing Company in Gulfport and served for eight years on the Gulfport City Council for Ward 3. He served on several commissions and committees in Gulfport, and served on the Gulf Islands National Seashore Advisory Board. He was ordained a deacon at First Baptist Church of Gulfport and remained active as a deacon at Broadmoor Baptist Church. He was a Master Mason and Shriner and enjoyed woodworking, fishing, hunting, and restoring antique cars. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, and he will be remembered for the many lives he touched.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Reavis E. Allen and Alton Bruce Allen; and grandson, Caleb Thornton.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Polly Simmons Allen of Gulfport; children, Pam Thornton of Gulfport, Gordon Allen, Jr. of Gulfport, Steve Allen and his wife Kathy of Gulfport, and Robin Lambert and her husband Lloyd of Pass Christian; brother, Thomas Allen of Atlanta; 4 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Friday, April 3, 2009, at RIEMAN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport, where friends may visit from 4-7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2009, in the funeral home chapel at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Evergreen Gardens in Gulfport.
