Gloria Jean Mitton, age 77, passed away on May 9, 2024 in Gulfport, Mississippi.
Gloria was born in Gulfport, but lived around the world as an Army Brat. She graduated Orleans American High School in Orleans, France. She worked many years as librarian and substitute teacher at St. Michael’s School in Silver Spring, Maryland. Gloria returned to Gulfport in 2009 and became a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where she served as an active parishioner, greeter and a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. She was known for her love for her family, which knew no bounds.
Gloria was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, John H. Mitton Jr.; parents, Alfred A. Porter Jr. and Dorothy Manley Porter; 3 sisters, Allene Swofford, Sarah Anderson and Aileen Koch.
She is survived by her son John Allen Mitton (Carol) of Slidell, Louisiana; grandchildren, John William Mitton (Charlie) of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Rebecca Rose DiMarco (Ryan) of Princeton, Texas; and two sisters, Alice Crego of Pearland, Texas and Kathleen Mayo of Lexington, Mississippi.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, May 17, 2024 at 11:30 AM, with visitation starting at 10:30 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 12290 Depew Rd. Gulfport, MS. Burial will follow at 1:30 PM at Biloxi National Cemetery, 400 Veterans Ave. Biloxi, MS.
