Glen Dean Hartfield Anderson, passed on to the arms of her Savior on September 20, 2021, at the age of 92. Glen was born July 28, 1929 in Lamar County, Mississippi, the ninth child of Will and Naomi Hartfield. Named by her four older sisters for a boy they had a crush on, Glen lived her life with her “boy” name and the constant barrage of mail listing her as “Mr.” Anderson.
She was in the inaugural class of Demonstration High School, an educational tool located on the campus of University of Southern Mississippi. The 15-year-old Glen is pictured in a group photo on the plaque located on the site of the school.
In 1948, she married V.A. (Afton) Anderson, following him in his military service across the country, then settling in Mississippi as the wife of a part-time minister and full-time telephone man. They spent most of their years on the Coast of Mississippi. She was very active in her church and loved sharing her Christian faith with children.
When her children were young, she went back to school to pursue her education. She earned a degree in elementary education. She later earned a master’s and specialist degree in teaching. Coming full circle, those degrees were conferred by USM. Glen taught school for several years.
Glen loved music and learned to play piano as an adult. Later, she passed on that love to her many piano students. She was an avid seamstress—sewing, knitting and crocheting. Until recently, she knitted caps for many babies and children. She loved to cook and took great pleasure in feeding family, friends and neighbors.
She is predeceased by her daughter, Jennifer.
Glen is survived by her husband of 73 years, who faithfully attended her in her last days, V.A. Anderson; children, Mike, and Nancy; 6 granddaughters; 9 great grandchildren; and 1 great, great grandchild. She was often surrounded by her many nieces and nephews.
Glen will be greatly missed.
