Gladys Stean Lofton

Attorney Gladys Lofton, a native of Coahoma, MS, passed away peacefully on March 23, 2023. She was a beloved member of the Harrison County community and will be remembered for her many accomplishments and contributions to the legal profession.

 

On June 26, 1960, Gladys Stean Lofton was born to Rose Lee Hampton and Floyd Jones, Sr. Gladys accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She graduated from Coahoma Agriculture High School in 1978 and continued her education at Coahoma Junior College (CJC) from 1978 to 1980, receiving her Associate of Arts in Law Enforcement in 1980. Gladys furthered her post-secondary studies at Delta State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice in 1982. Later that year, Gladys moved to Pascagoula, MS and made history by becoming the first African American female law enforcement officer in Moss Point, MS. During her two-year tenure, she not only responded to the call to serve and protect her community but also mentored young African American women interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement. During the late 1980s, Gladys relocated to Jackson, MS to advance her education at Mississippi College School of Law and obtained her Juris Doctorate in 1994. Afterward, then-Attorney Gladys Lofton moved to Harrison County, MS to establish her legal profession. Gladys dedicated nearly forty years to public service, civil rights, and social justice. She will be deeply remembered for her charity, faith, and tenacity.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents Rose Lee Hampton and Floyd Jones Sr.; and five siblings, Floyd Jones Jr, Cora Lee Hampton, Annie Doris Greer, Edward Hampton, and Darlene Clements.

 

She leaves to cherish her memory, a son Cedric Lofton of Biloxi, MS; ten siblings; three aunts; and a host of friends, relatives, and colleagues.

 

The visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 8, 2023, at First Missionary Baptist Church, 658 Esters Blvd, Biloxi, MS 39530. The funeral service will commence promptly at 11:00 a.m. following the visitation. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Harrison County Bar Association in her memory.
