GG (Gertrude) Alma Myers, age 101, died in Oak Ridge, TN, on June 6, 2010.
GG was born in San Francisco, CA, on February 7, 1909, the daughter of Otto and Emma Fredenburg Kaden. She spent her childhood playing in the poppy fields near her home (now the streets surrounding the Oakland Raiders' stadium) and singing in the streetcars (much to her mother's chagrin). After graduating from Mission High School, GG began a 20-year career as a telephone operator and supervisor. She married Clyde N Myers and saw the world as a military wife. With their children in tow, they lived in Texas, Japan, Florida and Mississippi. In retirement, she continued traveling the world with her sister, experiencing everything from safaris in Africa to cruises in Alaska. She lived on her own until age 90. For the past 11 years, she has lived with daughter Dorothy and son-in-law Frank Cole, still traveling frequently and enjoying her great-grandchildren. She has been a regular at Keystone Elder Care for the past few years creating intricate craft projects and spending time with the visiting children from First Step daycare.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church and active in the Red Hat Society. Just this past March, she went to Disney World with her family where her favorite ride was the new Soar adventure at Epcot.
GG is survived by daughters Dorothy (Frank) Cole and Joan Diehl; granddaughters Trudy Diehl, Amanda Diehl, Julie (Jeremy) Upham, and Debi (Francis) Colvais; great-granddaughters Amya Norfleet, Lauren Upham, Kelsi Upham, Karyssa Upham, Marisa Colvais, Abby Colvais.
Visitation was held at First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge on Tuesday, June 8, 5pm-7pm, immediately followed by a funeral service in the sanctuary, 7pm-8pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Keystone Elder Care or First United Methodist Church. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the Briarcliff staff for the loving care they provided in GG""""s final days.
A graveside service will be held at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens in Gulfport, MS opn Friday, June 11, 2010 at 11:00 a.m., .
