Gerhard Willi Zarske, 72 of Gulfport, passed away on Monday March 9, 2009 in Gulfport. After a long battle with colon cancer he died at home, peacefully in his sleep.
Mr. Zarske was preceded in death by his loving wife of 45 years, Marlies I. Zarske.
He is survived by his daughter Andrea, son-in-law Harry and grandchildren Harrison and Corey Olinger of Ridgeland, his son Kirk, daughter-in-law Kaycee and grandchildren Kinsey, Michael and William Zarske of Gulfport, and his son Eric, daughter-in-law Sherry and grandchildren Travis and Greyson Zarske of Sugar Land, TX. He is also survived by his siblings Horst Zarske, Christa Görsch, and Renate Wilhelms; of Germany.
He was a long time member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Gulfport. He had a deep quiet faith in the Lord which was exemplified by the way he lived his life. He never quoted scripture, prayed or sung out loud; but repaired church pews and bathroom lighting, without anyone's knowledge.
He came to this country at 17 years of age without a high school education, little understanding of the English language and a strong German accent. He joined the United States Navy to serve his new country and was proud to be a citizen of the United States. During his naval career, he earned the following awards: Navy Commendation Medal; Navy Achievement Metal, w/ combat V; Meritorious Unit Commendation; National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal, w/three bronze stars; Fleet Marine Force Combat Operations Insignia; Vietnam Campaign Medal: Combat Action Ribbon; Vietnam Gallantry Cross, w/Palm Leaf; Marksmanship Medal; Navy Good Conduct Medal (FOURTH award): Vietnam Honor Medal, Second Class; and Navy Commendation Medal. He retired from the Navy after twenty years of service attaining the rank of BUC.
During his retirement he was an active member of the Navy Seabee Veterans of America: Island-X1, Gulfport, MS. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, gardening, wood working, caring for his dogs and cherished the time spent with his grandchildren.
A visitation will be held Monday, March 16, 2009 from 12 - 1 p.m. with the funeral service immediately following at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Gulfport. Interment will follow at Biloxi National Cemetery at 2:30. RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Rd, Gulfport is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society, 417 Security Square, Gulfport, MS 39507.
