George “Hobart” Shaw, age 65, of Pearlington, passed away unexpectedly on August 30, 2021.
He is preceded in death by his father, Hobart D. Shaw Jr. and his mother, Margaret M. Shaw.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Shaw and his brother, David Alan Shaw.
Hobart was born in Gulfport and graduated from Coast Episcopal High School in Pass Christian in 1975. After high school he attended Jefferson Davis Jr. College where he heard an announcement over the intercom about an opening with the Oceanographic Department of the Navy. Little did he know at the time that this announcement would lead to a lifetime of adventures.
After being hired by NAVO his adventures began with a flight to Africa where he boarded an oceanographic ship in Mombasa, Kenya and then set sail in the Indian Ocean. He made many other trips around the world including visits to many other African countries, Japan, Iceland, Hawaii, Alaska, Reunion Island, Pakistan, The Seychelles, Roatan Island, The Middle East, and many of the countries in Europe. Of all the places he traveled Brazil was the country he enjoyed the most.
He returned to school and in March of 1991 graduated from The University of South Alabama with a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Geology.
He also held a CDL and traveled a good part of the United States as a Truck Driver. Later he returned to NAVO and spent most of the remainder of his career working in the offices at Stennis Space Center where his main focus was on taking satellite readings of ocean temperatures.
He had a sense of humor. He was excellent at grilling any kind of meat. He enjoyed good beer and good coffee, his gun collection, sailing, riding his motorcycle, and traveling the bayous in his canoe. He could tell you a lot of interesting things about science, the universe, guns, military weapons, history and would gladly share his political views with you. He loved his cats and was happily retired spending time playing darts, shooting pool, and sharing stories with friends at Turtle Landing, his favorite hangout in Pearlington. He also enjoyed spending time with friends and family in many of the other cities along the Gulf Coast. He will be greatly missed.
