George H. Schenck, of Diamondhead, MS, died on December 7, 2015. He was 87 years old.
George was born and raised in Rochester, NY. He served in the U.S. 1st Calvary Division Army of Occupation force in Japan immediately following WWII. After graduating from the University of Rochester in 1954 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, he joined the General Electric Company, enrolling in the company's Manufacturing Training Program. In the summer of 1955, he married Joan Parsells in Rochester, NY, on her graduation from Connecticut College for Women.
Upon completing the training program in 1957, George joined the Lamp Division of G.E. where he held various engineering and supervisory, including manager of the Youngstown Lamp Plant for 12 years. His company service spanned some 31 years, during which time he lived in Boston, Fort Wayne, Newark, and Bucyrus, Cleveland, Circleville, and Youngstown in Ohio. Following retirement, George and Joan moved to Diamondhead in 1987.
George is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joan H. Schenck, and 3 daughters, Betsy Gardner of Diamondhead, Margaret H. (Tom) Fischer, MD of Gettysburg, PA, and Barbara S. (Dale) Slucter of Richland, MI. Also, three granddaughters, Kristin Gardner of Diamondhead, and Alexandria and Catherine Slucter of Richland, MI.
George was an active member of Diamondhead Community Church, serving as an elder for three terms. He served as the co-chairman of the Building Fund Drive for the new sanctuary and also Chairman of two building programs that followed the sanctuary construction: the Administration/Education Building and the Memorial garden area located on the church grounds. In 1994, George was awarded the ""Man of the Year"" award by the Men of the Church Organization. He was a member of the Diamondhead Flying Club and the Diamond Squares, serving as club president among other duties.
George's hobbies included overseas travel, do-it-yourself projects, digital photography, and spending time with his grandchildren.
The family prefers contributions to the Diamondhead Community Church Memorial Fund.
