Mr. George Cothern McNeil, Sr., age 71, former resident of Gulfport and current resident of Leakesville, passed away on Thursday, July 24, 2008, in Gulfport.
Mr. McNeil was a native of Harrison County where he served three terms as District 2 Constable. A U. S. Navy veteran, he attended MGCCC (Perkinston and Jefferson Davis), was a graduate of the MS Law Enforcement Academy, and served 9 years with the Harrison County Sherriff's Department. He left Harrison County and went to Leakesville to help open and protect the new prison. His hobbies included fishing, gardening, woodworking, and cooking. Mr. McNeil was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Gulfport. He was a very loving husband, father, and proud Papaw of his 32 grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Lucy McNeil; brothers, Bill McNeil and Pat McNeil; sisters, Dorothy Hall and Edna Wills; stepson, Albert Shields, Jr.; and great grandchild, Ashton Scott Matthews.
He is survived by his wife, Linda F. McNeil of Leakesville; sons, George McNeil, Jr. of Bryan, TX, and Stan McNeil of Lyman; daughter, Pam Clark of Saucier; stepchildren, Renee' Brown of Granberry, TX, John Shields of Granberry, TX, and Dawn Hammond of Gulfport; brothers, James McNeil of Gulfport, Howard McNeil of Gulfport; sisters, Nell Wills of Purvis, MS, Melanie Yarber of Purvis, MS, and Mary Palmer of Gulfport; 32 grandchildren and great grandchildren; and a special canine, Jet Eye Jet.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 27, 2008, at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Rd., Gulfport, where friends may visit from 4-6pm. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 28, 2008, at 11 am in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Gulfport.
