Gulfport

George Ralph Fiegenbaum, lovingly known as “Big Fig”, passed away on Thursday, December 13, 2024 at the age of 71.

Having been born on February 18, 1953, in Fairhope, AL, George grew up in the Gulfport Handsboro area, where he graduated from Gulfport East High School in 1974. After graduating, George enjoyed a successful career as a Gulfport Firefighter for 27 years, moving up through the ranks and retiring as Lieutenant. The role as a firefighter brought many lifelong friends into George’s life, and those friends became his family and were there for him when he most needed them.

Outside of work, George was a skilled carpenter known to everyone as a perfectionist in his craft and was sought out along the Gulf Coast by many who appreciated his dedication to detail. His hobbies included water skiing, scuba diving, running, and dancing - with his favorites being the line dancing and the two stepping.

George is preceded in death by his parents, Paul George Fiegenbaum and Mary Gremlin Fiegenbaum; his brother, Bruce Fiegenbaum; his beloved dog, Jenny; and a host of uncles, aunts, half-sisters, nieces and nephews.

George will be missed by all who knew and loved him. It is comforting to know he is now at peace and no longer suffering from his long and courageous battle with Huntington’s disease.

A special thank you and sincere gratitude to Dina Myers for her long time friendship and support and to Ms T, George’s caregiver over the past few months, for her compassion and devotion in caring for George.

Another special thank you to the many firemen who selfishly gave their time to help their fellow fireman during this difficult time. The brotherhood among these firefighters is nothing short of remarkable.
