Frances Howell Martin passed away at age 94, on Monday, August 27, 2018 in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. "Nonnie" as she was known to her family and many friends, was born on March 16, 1924 in Mize, Mississippi, where she was raised.
Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, Charles Roland Martin; her mother and father, Troy L. Howell, Sr. and Minnie Sullivan Howell; sisters, Berma Dene Howell Garrett and Johnnie Howell Chauvin; and brother, Troy L. Howell, Jr.
She is survived by her children, Jane Martin DeAngelo (Buddy), Margaret Martin Gambrell, Harriet "Polly" Martin Jacobs, Dana Martin DuBois, and Ronald M. Martin; 6 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and friends
In 1946, at age 22, while working as a photographer at Olan Mills Studio in Gulfport, Mississippi, she met the love of her life, Roland, when taking his photograph for discharge from the U.S. Marines. They married and raised their family in his hometown, Pass Christian, Mississippi. Widowed in 2003, Mrs. Martin moved to Ocean Springs to live with her daughter, Margaret, after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. She made Ocean Springs her home and made many friends on her long walks with her beloved dog, Bella. The ladies of the First Presbyterian Church welcomed her into their church family as one of their own.
In Pass Christian, she was active in Martha's Guild of the Trinity Episcopal Church, the Pass Christian Chamber of Commerce, the Pass Christian Yacht Club, and the Garden Club. Both in the Pass and Ocean Springs, Frances was always active in the church and was a friend to everyone she met.
Visitation will be held on at the First Presbyterian Church of Ocean Springs on Thursday, August 30 at 1:00 p.m., with a service to follow at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Treehouse Montessori Christian School of the First Presbyterian Church of Ocean Springs, 921 Ocean Avenue, Ocean Springs, Mississippi, 39564. A private interment will be held at Live Oak Cemetery in Pass Christian.
