Mrs. Florence Arline Tobias, a longtime Long Beach resident, died early in the morning of Sunday, December 27, 2009 while at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg. She was 85 years old.
Mrs. Tobias was born on November 22, 1924 and spent her childhood in Belleville, IL. She was married to John Tobias on November 18, 1942 and spent the next several years traveling the World with her Air Force husband to many overseas lands such as the Philippines, Guam, and North Africa until the family settled in Long Beach in 1960. Here, she worked as a dedicated Nurses Aid, caring for infants in the Newborn Nursery of Memorial Hospital Gulfport.
Florence was a devout Catholic and longtime member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Long Beach. She was actively involved in many church activities, including teaching bible school and serving the alter society.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Sergeant John Tobias; her infant son, Tomy Tobias; one granddaughter, Melissa Tobias; and two sisters, Mary Therese and Virginia.
Florence is survived by her devoted children; four daughters Judith Tobias of Hattiesburg, Joan Bufkin of Dallas, TX, Anita Fennell of Hattiesburg, and Cathy Tobias of Charlotte, NC; three sons, Michael Tobias of Aurora, CO, Steven Tobias of Jakarta, Indonesia, Mark Tobias of Corpus Christi, TX; two siblings, Rose Helen Koerner of Belleville, IL and Jim Vernier of Shiloh, IL.
She had 19 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchilden.
Mrs. Tobias took great joy in her family and was a loving and caring mother who will be missed immeasurably. After a seven year battle with Alzheimers, she left this world with a silent expression of love for her family shining in her eyes.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, December 31, 2009, at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, where friends may visit from 9-10:00 AM
Interment will follow at the Biloxi National Cemetery on the Campus of the Biloxi VA Hospital, where she will be laid to rest next to her loving husband of 58 years, John.
